DISCUSSION ITEMS

First Reading of WSSDA Recommended Policy Revisions

On a semi-regular basis, the WSSDA Policy and Legal team releases suggested policy and procedure updates to schools, along with an explanatory publication, the WSSDA Policy and Legal News; the most recent two versions of which were published in December and March

In the December issue the WSSDA team recommended modification to the following policies and procedures:

2413 – Equivalency Credit Opportunities
  • Changes to Career and Technical Courses Section,(P-1)
  • Addition of a section on Elective Credit for Paid Work Experiences
5005 – Employment and Volunteers: Disclosures, Certification Requirements, Assurances, and Approval
  • Added Single sentence section on page two and legal reference on page 3, both related to compliance with RCW 49.44.240

In the March Issue, the WSSDA team recommended modification to the following policies and procedures:

6701/6701P Recess and Physical Activity (NEW)
  • The state legislature passed SB 5257 -Public Schools—Daily Recess in the 2022-2023 session.  It became law effective this year.   WSSDA has finally developed a policy to reflect the requirements of this bill.

The three policies immediately below are related insofar as they were previously consolidated in Policy 6700.   As the State Legislature and Congress continue to further "refine" laws that govern the work of school districts the policies become more prescriptive.   As a result, the WSSDA recommends breaking them into three separate sets of policy/procedure
2124/2124P Physical Education and Health Class (NEW)
  • This new policy contains sections moved from 6700 and new details that incorporate elements of SB 5257 -Public Schools—Daily Recess
6700/6700P Nutrition (Revised)
  • This policy has been modified to remove sections on Wellness, and Physical Education & Health from the policy and procedure
6702/6702P Wellness (NEW)
  • This new policy contains elements removed from the current policy 6700 pertaining to wellness.   This policy addresses the federal requirements tied to the federal school lunch program.
