Each school year the Woodland School District Board of Directors reviews and approves our Highly Capable (Hi-C) Program. Last year our Hi-C program was reviewed and approved 8.26.19.
Previously, our goal has been to implement systems to identify more accurately students who are Highly Capable. Having made significant strides in identifying more Hi-C students, our next step was to clearly identify guidelines and processes for implementing Hi-C effectively and equitably. In the 2019-20 school year, Woodland School District implemented the following improvements in our Hi-C program:
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in person learning in the spring of 2020 we had to get creative on how we would meet as a MSC and coordinate notifying families. Also, because of the shut down of buildings, we were not able to conduct our full “CogAt” assessment of all current 4th grade students identified as Highly Capable to help determine educational placement for 5th grade. As a result we were able to hold the MSC meetings remotely, notify families via phone and email, and continue all students designated as Highly Capable in 4th grade into a 5th grade Highly Capable designation. We communicated with all 4th grade families of Highly Capable students that we would conduct their full “CoGat” assessment in the spring of their 5th grade year (Spring 2021).
We are still planning on a team of teachers and administrators attending the Washington Educators of Talented and Gifted Conference although this year we will have “virtual” attendance in the main sessions and breakout groups. In 2020-21, we will continue with our goals for the Woodland Highly Capable Program from the 2019-20 school year. Also, we are serving students who are identified as Highly Capable through Remote Learning 2.0 until we are able to serve them in person.
