Leslie Lawley, a Woodland citizen, thanked the Board for the new playground equipment installed at Woodland Intermediate School.

REPORTS TO THE BOARD

Taylor Vossen, Student Representative, presented that high school seniors are finishing their Senior Project presentations, and that elections for next year’s ASB officers will be taking place in the coming weeks.

Director Donald thanked the administrators for their reports.

BOARD REPORTS, REQUESTS, AND COMMENTS

Director Madsen said in reference to the recent discussion of impact fees, he feels it would be helpful to have a map of the district posted on the district website. Director Donald asked Superintendent Green if the board would be able to see the responses to the upcoming school climate survey. Superintendent Green said yes, once the survey is done, the board with have the results.  Director Donald also said it was great seeing the play structure up and being used at the Intermediate School. He asked about a pole in the play area, if a basketball hoop was normally on it because he was concerned about the sharp edges that could injure a student. Scott Landrigan, Director of Facilities and Safety, said the pole would be removed.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Woodland Intermediate School Principal Steven Carney and Associate Administrator Lynnell Tsugawa-Murray, along with many WIS staff members, gave a presentation to the Board covering the Intermediate School. The presentation opened with a video of the students running to the new play structure the first time they played on it. Carney spoke the school start in September 2015, where they are currently, and where the school intends to go in the future. “I’m asking the staff to do the same thing we ask our kids to do, which is to take risks,” explained Carney. “What we know today doesn’t make yesterday wrong, it makes tomorrow better.” He said the time spent at the beginning of the year was focusing on what makes the school special and defining their value and beliefs concerning the climate and culture of the school.  Director Watts asked how many staff are currently at WIS. Principal Carney said 50 staff with 475 students and growing. Director Madsen said since transitioning is difficult for students, he hoped there was consistency within the programs as well as things that are unique to the schools. Principal Carney said there is ongoing collaboration between the administrators as they share ideas to help with the consistency and look for ways to build a K-12 model. The staff pointed to collaboration and teamwork as being key elements in the school’s successes over the course of the current year, particularly discussing the importance of using assessments and data analysis to track student progress and improve student learning.  Murray spoke of the Learning Assistance Program (LAP) and how LAP helps ensure struggling students receive the extra assistance they need, while staff members talked about the implementation of Extension Groups to offer additional challenge to students who are excelling. Carlotta Propersi, lead for the English Language Learners (ELL) program, presented information about the Imagine Learning curriculum which is an excellent tool for helping ELL students learn. Other topics included the importance of physical and health education presented by Kristi Olson, who strives to make physical fitness a love that lasts with students for a lifetime, the introduction of the Playworks Recess program which teaches inclusion and has corresponded to a reduction in playground incidents by 58% in the single month since its implementation; after-school programs such as Homework Club where students are motivated to read by reading to a therapy dog named Rigel; and the use of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create an atmosphere where students support one another through positive interactions and encouraging comments.  Director Donald asked Kristi Olson if there was anything the program needed.  She said she had been spoiled with having a full gym at the Woodland Primary and that what would help is a full time art and music teacher to keep from having so many doubles classes in the gym.  She said the wall is always up to help with distractions.  Director Donald asked if staff involved in intervention float around as needed.  Principal Carney said that whoever was most qualified was brought in.  Other staff members spoke on a variety of topics, pointing to teamwork, collaboration, and the development of a combined vision and mission to help the staff feel like a team and a family working together toward the common goal of providing excellent educational opportunities to all of the school’s students.

President Watts asked if the board was in agreement to postpone the two discussion items due to time constraints. The board agreed to postpone them until the next meeting.

ADJOURNMENT

President Watts adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m. Following the meeting, Principal Carney gave a tour of the intermediate school to board directors and meeting attendees.
