RE: Facilities & Safety Report

Facilities

  • Handover of Facilities and Safety has been a relatively smooth transition.  Brian Wrigley and Vicky Barnes did tremendous work in preparation to get me up to speed.
  • Facilities is pursuing a D1 grant ($31,568) from OSPI to complete our Study and Survey work in order to be eligible for future funding opportunities.  For more information, please see WAC 392-341-030.
  • Facilities and Business Services have partnered with Ameresco to pursue a Clean Buildings Performance grant that could potentially fund some great energy upgrades to our buildings as well as get us into compliance with upcoming WA state energy use standards.
  • We are continuing to identify and repair aging components in the WMS fire alarm system.  We are also pursuing multiple bids for a total system replacement.  This system triggered 16 false alarms in 2024 and resulted in concerned communication from the Fire Marshal.
  • Facilities and Grounds area making aesthetics and “curb appeal” a priority for our buildings.  We will concentrate on clean-up, debris removal, and pruning for the winter months and then transition into green grass and good playing surfaces for sports in the spring.
  • Permitting and sub contractors are in place for the new portable at North Fork Elementary.
  • We are working with a local contractor to correct the issues with the HS irrigation system in order to begin watering as soon as necessary for spring growth.
  • The issue with the men’s restroom sinks at the high school has been corrected.

Safety

  • We have completed G-Max testing for our artificial Turf field.  The field is within G-max specifications for impact safety.  We anticipate that the District will need to consider replacing the turf and resurfacing the running track within the next four to five years.
  • We are working with a traffic engineer to find a solution to the Parent drop-off jam each day at North Fork Elementary.
  • We are providing some lock and keyway changes to Columbia Elementary School so that the exterior gates and doors can remain locked throughout the school day for better security.
  • I’ve met with the interim police chief and fire chief to begin the conversation about planning future first responder training in our facilities for better response and student engagement.
  • We are planning to have all Facilities staff trained by April so that we’ll have at least one CPR-certified person at each school.
  • We’re in the beginning stages of planning for a larger scale training event for the District around Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and Standard Reunification Method (SRM)
