REPORTS TO THE BOARD

WCE Executive Summary

To:       Michael Green, Superintendent

From:   Kathleen Griffin, Community Liaison

For:      School Board Meeting 10-27-08

The participation numbers for fall community education classes have been less than stellar.  I canceled the computer classes for lack of enrollment.  Other classes are going but with reduced numbers.  The yoga instructor considered quitting but after several conversations she has decided to hang in there for fall in the hopes that the numbers will improve.  The computer instructor has quit and is now teaching for LCC Woodland.  As I stated in our goals meeting the economy is definitely a huge factor.  I am continuing to research alternate means of distribution for the winter brochure.  I am looking into insertion rates and the possibility of an online only brochure.  As a follow-up to our conversation I will schedule a meeting with LCC Woodland to see what the possibility might be for going together on some classes.  The fact that community colleges now get FTE for community education classes certainly puts them in a different arena.  I have been working with the City on Make a Difference Day which will occur on Saturday October 25th.  The Snowflake Bazaar started out slow but is beginning to pick up in numbers.  The youth basketball registrations have been distributed.  Ridgefield gave very late notice that they do not wish to participate in the league.  We will proceed with Kalama and Woodland teams for our league.

I received notice from the Safe Schools Coalition that the baseline data for the Safe Schools Grant will need to be redone because OSPI wants a team of people to look at the data.  As you recall Craig Downs and I completed the questionnaire last spring.  I am still waiting for clarification of what "team" entails.  We are in the process of doing the annual update of the emergency plan.   The information has been distributed for review to each building.  Tegan will input the corrected data as we receive it.  Tegan will attend a data administrator seminar on 10/23 at the ESD for Rapid Responder.  We continue to gather information for the chemical list.  It would be an understatement to say it is a work in progress.

I have attached numbers for WCC and YCC.  Missy is planning a family fun night in November as a fund raiser for the program.  I have also attached a flyer for this event as well.

I would like to express my gratitude to you, the Board and many staff who expressed their condolences after the passing of my Mother.
