REPORTS TO THE BOARD

WCE Report

To: Michael Green, Superintendent
From: K. Griffin, Community Liaison
For: School Board Meeting 4-27-09

The spring/ summer brochure was distributed the first week of April. The registration numbers are average for this time of year. The gluten free baking class, hunter's education, first aid and volleyball camp seem to be the front runners for registrations. I have received several calls wanting to know if swimming lessons were going to be held this year because of all the proposed budget cuts. We have one session scheduled for July and one for August at Hough Pool in Vancouver.

I wanted to take time to acknowledge our very special staff that was so helpful and supportive during last week's tragic loss of our students Katie Blacklaw and Eddie Denson. Bill Hanson, the custodial crew and Ron Boswell were invaluable in getting the facilities ready for the services on Sunday. LaDonna Holmes and the cooks really out did themselves in food preparation and serving during a very long day on Sunday. LaDonna and the kitchen staff also prepared the first meal that we took to the families on the day after the accident. The high school staff volunteered and took meals every day after Weds and bought food out of the faculty fund for the services on Sunday. I was reminded once again what outstanding men and leaders John Shoup and Dan Uhlenkott really are. I will be forever grateful to the District for the Crisis Management training that the District allowed me to receive which has served so well in the deaths of six students in our District. So many businesses and individuals volunteered to make Sunday very special in the hearts of those families. I am honored and humbled to have been a part of all of it.

We have received the health card testing contract back from Cowlitz County. We are having trouble accessing the software with the health department. Tegan is helping me get to the root of the problem. Hopefully we will be up and running by May. I have been amazed at the amount of inquiries we have received about the testing. It should be a decent income stream for the District.

We have not received any word on the AED grant that we wrote for CINTAS. We were supposed to receive word by March 31st. I have a contact number that I will try and call and get a definitive answer prior to the May board meeting.

Numbers for WCC and YCC are attached. Plans are to run WCC through the summer months again this year. We have found it to be extremely difficult to find an alternate day care provider for the folks who use us 10 months out of the year.

WCC Report:

We have 2 new active registrations and 2 additional new registrations to begin in the near future! Our during the day kindergartner numbers have been up, afterschool has been right at 30 or just under. Pretty normal this time of year due to little league. We will be creating a great display for Art Fest 2009, so look for WCC when you go enjoy our talented students!
