A Paraeducator is defined as a school employee who works under the supervision of teachers or other professional practitioners.
Some Paraeducator duties are instructional in nature and provide direct services to students. This could include providing instructional support in a classroom, in small groups, or to individuals. The job titles used to identify these employees may include, among others: paraprofessionals, teacher aides or assistants, educational assistants, instructional assistants, or one on one aides.
Some Paraeducator duties are supervisory in nature. The job titles used to identify these employees may include, among others: recess aide or lunch supervision.
Paraeducators must meet the minimum hiring requirement of either (1) documentation to support an Associate’s Degree or transcripts to verify the comparable equivalence (i.e. 72 college quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited university, college, community college, or business school), or (2) ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score of 461. The ETS Parapro Assessment test can be taken at ESD 112 or Lower Columbia College. There are study guides to prepare for the test.
Certificated Substitutes: The current rate of pay for certified substitutes is $200 per day or $120 for a half-day. Certificated subs who complete 25 full workdays (two half days equal one full day) during a semester will receive an increased rate of $220 per full day and $130 per half day in the next semester. Certificated subs who travel to Yale Elementary will receive an additional $20 travel bonus per day.
Classified Substitutes: The current rate of pay is $19.39/hr for Paraprofessional substitutes, $20.19/hr for Diverse Support Paraprofessional (DSP) substitutes, $18.31/hr for Food Service substitutes, $21.49/hr for Custodial substitutes and $19.58/hr for Secretary substitutes. Successful candidates will be required to submit to an employee-paid background check.
