Dear Woodland Middle School Students, Parents, and Guardians:

Welcome to Woodland Middle School!

If you are new to WMS, we would like to welcome you to the Trojan family. Our goal is to make your transition as smooth as possible. If you are a returning student, welcome back. Please remember it is our desire to involve students’  families as partners at WMS. We believe this increases academic achievement and creates a better atmosphere for learning.

As the principal of WMS, I wanted to take a few moments to introduce myself. This is my 29th year in education. For the last 17 years, I have been a building administrator, with the last thirteen years as a middle school principal. I was honored in 2013 as Oregon’s Middle School Principal of the Year and my school was identified as a MetLife/NASSP National Breakthrough School, a National Distinguished Title I School, and an Oregon Model School for four years in a row. Prior to becoming an administrator, I taught for 11 years in Washington, most of them at the middle school level.

We are proud that the Washington State Board of Education, OSPI, and the EOGOAC have once again identified WMS as a “State Recognized School”. This is a tribute to the hard work of families, students, and staff and it is a great honor to have earned this recognition for the second year in a row.

With all of that said, I am most proud of my family including my wife of more than 23 years, Angela. I have a son (CJ) who is a senior in high school and a daughter (Summer) who is a junior in high school. We enjoy spending time together traveling, shopping, watching sports (sometimes playing), going to church, and fishing (even though we don’t catch much.)

This school year we will continue to focus on individual student needs and strive to live up to our mission: “WMS is Woodland Public Schools' strong core, consistently finding positive ways to cultivate academic and behavioral growth in the entire learning community.”

A theme that I believe in is “Champions Find A Way.” I want us to help our students learn the value of hard work and what it takes to be successful. I look forward to working with your Champion.

Sincerely,

James Johnston
Woodland Middle School Principal
