Woodland Public Schools took part in the Great Washington Shakeout Day on Thursday, October 21

The Great Washington ShakeOut Day takes place annually on the third Thursday of October. School districts and other organizations throughout Washington State and the world hold earthquake drills to teach and practice earthquake safety.

In Washington State, we also practice tsunami drills on our coastline. Tsunamis, also known as “tidal waves,” result from earthquakes taking place under the ocean which cause huge waves to head in-land potentially creating catastrophic damage.

In the event of an earthquake, everyone should:

DROP where you are onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter, if nearby.

COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand. If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter. If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall away from windows. Stay on your knees, bend over to protect your vital organs.

HOLD ON until shaking stops. Under shelter: hold on to your shelter with one hand and be ready to move with it if it shifts. No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.
