RE: Woodland High School Board Report
Modifying Morning Staffing Patterns
This past Monday, February 13th, WHS adopted a modified building access schedule as recommended by Compass Consultants. Beginning this week, our building hours are as follows:
North and South facing doors into the student commons area:
Days
Morning Hours
Afternoon Hours
Monday
9:30 am to 10:15 am
3:50 pm to 4:30 pm
Tuesday through Friday
8:30 am to 9:00 am
West facing doors into the main office:
Open Hours
All days
8:00 am to 4:30 pm
All other doors will remain locked throughout the day. In addition to these changes, staff have been assigned on a rotating basis to monitor the buses as students arrive and to monitor the front entrance. Administrators will be supervising the other entrances throughout the morning.
9th Grade On Track
During the 2020-2021 school year (the last year for which I could easily access the data), the state of Washington reported that 70% of all 9th graders had passed all their classes and were, therefore, on track for graduation. Woodland High School reported a rate of 69.3% that year. At the end of semester one this year, 92% of all WHS 9th graders had passed on their classes and were on track for graduation. You read that correctly. 92%. 22 points above the state average. Key WHS staff members worked in a highly organized and directed way with those 9th graders who had failing grades. It was a team effort, and it relied heavily on the really excellent preparation these students received at WMS. The approach was so amazingly effective that we have expanded it slightly this semester. Three teachers will be splitting one “extra hour” stipend and will be working with those math students who are struggling in math. There’s one thing we know for sure. 92% is the new normal for 9th grade on track.
