RE: Monthly Report Woodland Primary School (Grades PreK-1)

Gollyology: WPS welcomed OMSI once again for two assemblies on June 8th. Children were entertained by a very talented and engaging juggler, delighting in the tricks he could perform. The performer uses his show, Gollyology, to teach science concepts through experiential learning. The students are still talking about this very educational and fun event. A big thank you to retiring teacher Amy Rich for leading the effort to bring Gollyology to WPS.

Student Authors: Children have been working hard to connect what they read to their writing. Writing to explain is a critical standard that facilitates strong communication skills and is essential for performing well on state assessments. In the past few weeks, our young learners have been excited to practice writing their own books and reading them to others classrooms. This has evolved into a partnership across grade levels that inspires younger students and empowers the older ones.

Additionally, these young authors are taking every opportunity to read their books to staff members. It is exciting to watch dedicated employees stop whatever they are doing to spend a few moments with a child to read with them. It has been so powerful to witness their growing confidence and connection to their own learning!

Celebration of Learning:  The morning of June 15th was very special for WPS. A group of 17 mothers and 1 father completed two years of English classes. These dedicated adult learners started with very limited English proficiency, speaking primarily Spanish. They have been meeting regularly every week to improve their skills and become more confident engaging with the schools. Their progress has been remarkable.

These adults students are the parents of many WPS children. They received certificates and flowers in a ceremony in the WPS Library. Children treated them to the Pledge of Allegiance in both English and Spanish. The parents were very proud and humbled by the reception they received from students. Most importantly, WPS students were inspired to work hard and never give up. These remarkable young people are very proud of these adults who are showing them that resilience and determination brings results!
