RE: Columbia Elementary Board Report
2021-22 CES Enrollment
Dual Language Site Visits
At the end of March, Columbia sent a small group of staff members to visit two dual-language schools. The school districts were Manson School District and Granger School District. During the visit, CES was able to collaborate and discuss program supports, interventions, instructional strategies, assessments, and recruiting opportunities. Overall, we had a great time and gathered many ideas/suggestions to consider as we continue our dual language program here at Columbia Elementary. The visits were rejuvenating and a confirmation that we are doing good work here at CES. The staff who attended from Columbia were David Starkey, Ashley Kleinschmidt, Mayra Martinez and Zaira Martinez.
Math Intervention Programs
Due to the academic "need" in the content area of mathematics, Columbia Elementary has started an after-school math intervention. The selected audience is students in grades 2-4 who need additional support in math. CES used a variety of tools and assessments to determine what students were selected to receive the math intervention. Currently, Columbia has 8 staff members serving a total of 40 students. Math intervention is roughly one hour a day, Monday-Thursday.
NW PBIS Conference
Columbia sent a team of 5 staff members to the NW PBIS conference in Tacoma. During the conference, the team gained a variety of strategies, methods of implementation, and ideas for moving forward. Attending the conference were David Starkey, Audrey Frazier, Kel Leavens, Carey Hanson, and Anna Len. CES is already hitting the ground with some new ideas and approaches for the 2022-23 school year.
Multicultural Event at Columbia Elementary:
The building leadership team here at CES is working on completing the logistics for our first annual multicultural event at Columbia Elementary. Although we are in the early stages of the planning, the goal is to have a multicultural day where students can wear anything that represents their heritage. We are also looking at having a school-wide assembly where groups from various cultures sing songs, do dances, and deliver other cultural activities.
Woodland Reads: The One and Only Ivan
Columbia has been participating in the "Woodland Reads" initiative. All CES families have been given a copy of the "One and Only Ivan" (English or Spanish). Each night families read a select number of pages and then have an opportunity to answer comprehension questions. All students who give the correct answer receive a ticket to enter into a drawing for a new bike.
At Columbia, many of the teachers read the select pages in class to assure that all students are getting the opportunity to participate in the activity.
As a culminating project Columbia will be having a "Paint Night" on May 10th from 6:00-7:30 PM. The reason why we chose a paint night is due to the connection of painting within the story.
Incoming Kinder Night
Columbia Elementary will be having our open house for all incoming Kindergarten students on May 17, 2022. This will be an opportunity for students and families to tour our school, meet school staff, and become familiar with Columbia Elementary. Not only is it an exciting time for Columbia but also for our incoming students and families.
