RE: Athletics Report
WIAA Reclassification Appeal
Every 4 years, the WIAA re-evaluates each school’s classification based on enrollment, with an opportunity to appeal the classification.
According to the WIAA classification, Woodland High School Grades 9-11 identifies schools as 2A if their enrollment is between 450-899. As Woodland High School grades 9-11 was indicated to have 486. However, this number does not take into account a large number of our student population who do not participate in athletics according to the guidance of their church. Our pool of athletes more sincerely aligns with that of a 1A school.
Per the recommendation of former Athletic Director Paul Huddleston, the high school administration and I investigated appealing our classification and dropping down into the 1A league. After surveying our coaches for input, we learned it was something they wanted us to pursue on behalf of the athletes.
After reviewing our history of performance and the impacts of the levy and the impact it’s had on our feeder programs in the middle school we believe we have a good case to make. I submitted the appeal attached below to the WIAA board and participated in a hearing on January 19th.
I was informed today our appeal was denied, and we will continue to compete in the 2A league for the next four years.
