Key documents

I've also reviewed the list of recommended curricula submitted.  To get the list down to a manageable size for the committee, I reviewed each option. I visited EdReports and a few other vetting sources.  As a result, I was able to bring it down to four curricula for the committee to review. Please see below.

Our committee agreed we would keep conversations and communication about the process clear and transparent.  When we meet, we will establish and honor norms and procedures to ensure our communication with one another and the groups we represent are transparent, accurate, and timely.  We will be utilizing surveys to collect feedback throughout the process.

November 13th Meeting Notes

Welcome and introductions

Clarify process and goals/mission

- Copy of Math Mission Statement

- Criteria for Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Review initial survey - Staff Survey Results

Create norms

- Assume Positive Intent

- Data, research, and experience will be used to make an objective decision

- Keep a long-term and wide range perspective (students and teachers change)

- Remember everyone has the same goal and differing opinions are helpful

- We will communicate transparently and regularly throughout the process

Deep look at a vertical alignment: Heidi reviewed the Linear Functions Math Progression with committee members to provide focus on the mathematics we’ll look for in two resources today.

Parent Perspective - Asha met with the parents to discuss their perspective

- Resources to support students and parents completing math homework or problem sets is critical

- Homework is actually welcome if done right (practice of content, not continuation of lessons) and with reasonable timeframes (do not want hours of homework)

- Differentiation is important because the kids voice at times math is too easy or too hard

- Communication is vital because often parents don’t know what their children are learning or how they are learning it

- No strong opinions about online vs hardcopy so long as resources are accessible to all (if online, print versions are provided, etc.)

Communication Follow Up:

- Copy of our agenda will be shared out to all math teachers 6-12

- We invite all staff to provide us with questions they'd like to us to explore after reading our reviews and list of questions.

Next Steps:

At our next meeting, we’ll review the results collected in the surveys above of the initial review. Then we will review the other two resources and evaluate them with the same surveys.
