Woodland School Board - Monthly Update

April 2011

The two April Monday morning late starts focused on the WIS Title 1 Schoolwide Plan and MSP proctor training. This was the last Monday this year that we will focus on our Schoolwide Plan. We feel very accomplished by the progress that we made towards our action plans this year.

WIS staff and students are very proud of our bullying rates. As reported by WIS students we had the lowest rates in Cowlitz County. We are also proud of the consistent decline in student reports of bullying over each of the last four consecutive years.

Mr. and Mrs. Knudson's 4th and 6th grade classrooms are participating in a project from the Jump $tart Coalition, a national nonprofit financial education organization. Through their work with the Jump $tart Coalition and Western Washington University, Mr. and Mrs. Knudson were invited to have Washington State's Attorney General, Rob McKenna, visit our school. The Attorney General visited WIS on Friday, April 22nd to have conversations with students about financial literacy - saving and making wise financial decisions. Attorney General McKenna spent 45 minutes in the library with students sharing a short story about financial education and then conducted a discussion with the students about money and their future. Both classrooms conduct a yearlong "classroom economy" with students participating in all aspects of a real economy, like job applications, payroll records, paychecks, bank accounts, and a general store. The 6th grade competes in a stock market game, buying and selling stocks worth $100,000. The core concepts of financial literacy are integrated with both the math and social studies learning standards.

We are currently working with the WMS football program to implement a spring study group for future WMS football players. Girls participating in volleyball at WMS next year will have the same opportunity. Coach Green is leading this effort. WIS teachers, parents, Coach Green and I will be assisting with after school supervision.
