Re:      February Review

Here is an overview of the key activities we worked on in relation to teaching and learning this month.

Monday's:  We had three Monday's this month for staff development time. Two of the Monday's were used by our Navigation leaders to prep us for the upcoming months lessons which were focused on student led conferences and registering for next year's classes.  Seniors are working on their culminating project presentations.  I continue to marvel at how much we do accomplish during Monday late starts and can't imagine not having this time to work together as a group.

Other information:  First semester grades indicated some continuing positive trends with student grades.  We believe Opportunity Time is becoming a fundamental reason for the reduction in students who are failing courses.  Although the trend is good, we still have too many students who are failing courses. During senior interviews, students are still supportive of Opportunity Time and they really like the Friday Rewards incentive.

Our girls basketball team won the league championship and are playing in the district tournament right now which included our first district home game in over 10 years. Our boys basketball team won their first league games in over two years which included an exciting win over Hockinson in their last game of the season. Travis Rodman was our lone state qualifier for wrestling.  The other interesting note along the lines of extra-curricular is the O Ambassadors club sponsored a Talent Show for Saturday, February 27th.  The event made over $700 for the club.

This is the final big push to prepare our students for the reading and writing HSPE  which will begin in March.  As we prepare students for conferences and registration, we took many of our sophomores to the Skill Center for a preview. Mrs. Thorson, Ms. Lindberg and Mrs. Sloniker have been working with the middle school to schedule students for next year.  On a final note, we once again survived Valentine's Day and found ways to make it not too much of a disruption for our students and staff. It did help that the actual day was on a Sunday this year.
