Q: The District will have to cut $3,000,000 from next year’s budget if the levy fails. Why won’t they have to cut the levy amount of $5,000,000?
School District budgets in Washington State run from August through July. The Renewal EP&O levy is collected during the regular 12-month calendar year. Since the current levy runs through December 2020, taxes paid in the fall of 2020 will be available for use in the 2020-2021 budget.
However, if the community fails to approve a replacement levy in subsequent years, the total cuts to each year’s budget will amount to $5,000,000 for those years in order to make up the difference for the budget shortfall from the missing levy funding.
