Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

Hello Families,

I hope you are making it through this difficult time and have been able to have some fun and enjoyment during the summer.  I want to welcome you back to the 2020-21 school year and look forward to seeing everyone soon.  As you have heard, we will be starting the year out remotely.  This webpage will walk you through the WMS remote learning plan since we will not be starting school as normal this fall due to the Washington State guidelines, OSPI expectations, and local Cowlitz County Health Department guidelines.

While I would prefer to have students at school every day, we will try to make the most of this difficult situation.  We have been working behind the scenes to prepare for remote learning, along with being able to pivot to a Hybrid model if things get better, ultimately leading to a full return to school.  As you can imagine, this is no small task considering all of these models are quite different, and recommendations keep changing.

In our model this fall, we will work to provide new and rigorous learning that includes live lessons each day and teacher communication utilizing Google Classroom. Students can expect an increase in teacher-led instruction as well as some independent and family-supported learning time at home.   We are excited that every student at WMS will have a chromebook assigned this year making it easier to adapt to a remote learning environment.  We will have chromebook “pick up days” during student intake meetings with homeroom teachers where students will get the curriculum and materials necessary for the start of the year and learn about our remote learning system.

I apologize in advance for any frustration or stress this model may add to your family.  Understanding that this is not the best scenario for learning, we hope to make the most of it.  Please know that it is our desire to help your child through this difficult time and continue to provide quality educational opportunities.  Should a concern or issue arise, please work to resolve it with the teacher or other staff member as necessary.   Thanks for your understanding.

Finally, we are excited to announce that Woodland Middle School was once again recognized by Washington as a “State Recognized School”.  This is a tribute to your dedication and support of our school community.  I salute your efforts and am proud of our students.  Here’s to a great start!
