Addition of girls soccer program at WMS

The LCMSAA athletic league has decided to add girls' soccer in the fall. It will start and end within the same time frame as our other middle school sports.

WMS has the facility for this program, and through both an interest survey and a sign-up, it has become evident that we have an adequate number of students interested to make this program happen.

Our athletic program review by OSPI this year revealed a deficiency in our middle school girls participation numbers, and adding this program will most likely make us compliant.  In addition, we anticipate this program will be attractive to many of our Latina students, allowing us to offer a more equitable athletic program.

It is anticipated that the startup costs for the first year of this program will be approximately $5000.

  • Jerseys: surplussed from the high school
  • Equipment: surplussed from the high school (plus approx $500 for some newer balls, practice pennies, etc.)
  • Coach:1 paid coach $2720 (base)
  • Transportation: Longest travel will be Castle Rock
  • Officials: 4 home games (approx. $120 per game)
  • Goals: Already there
  • Maintenance: Will need to stripe soccer lines in addition to football lines.
For year 1, we are proposing a 7/8 combined team... 20 kids max.
Ongoing costs may increase depending upon student interest.
Preliminary approval has been granted pending board approval and adequate budget capacity.
Administrative Recommendation /MOTION/  " I move we authorize the implementation of middle school girls soccer for the 2017-2018  school year."
