The Woodland High School Drama Department proudly presents their first musical in years, "Little Shop of Horrors," open to the community with performances on Thursday, May 18, 2017; Friday, May 19, 2017; and Saturday, May 20, 2017. All performances begin at 7 p.m. with admissions costs at $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.

WHS students and staff rehearse for their upcoming performance

The play involved a great deal of preparation for the students and staff involved. "This is the first musical performed by the WHS drama in many years," said Branden Mcfarland, the drama director. "Musicals require a lot of production including having professionals who can teach the actors to sing and dance for the musical numbers."

To perform the music for the singing and dance numbers, the play features a five-piece ensemble made up of students and band director, Bryana Steck. The band will perform the music live during the performance.

In addition to the student performances, "Little Shop of Horrors" features a giant talking (and singing) piranha plant. In order to accomplish this feat, the students and staff created giant puppets. "The puppets are extremely large, incredibly fragile, and complicated to operate," explained Mcfarland. "That being said, we're going to be working all the way up to the 11th hour, and we will definitely be ready!"

Other challenges face drama productions, including the performance space. Woodland's brand-new high school features a state-of-the-art performance area, however the large windows and timing of the show meant the crew needed to account for daylight. "At our 7 p.m. starting time, the sun won't have fully set at all, so our lighting team had to account for that," said Mcfarland. "When you put on a musical this big, there are a million things to do so we will continue to polish our performance up until the last minute."
