Safe, healthy, and nurturing school environments (Goal 2)

As an extension to the board retreat we agreed to extend our conversation and goal setting on the topic of Goal 2, Safe, healthy, and nuturing school environments.

Currently Schools all implement common safety practices and heightened security.   Schools provided the following information regarding their practices:

 

What are our schools doing to provide for the safety of students?

 

Woodland High School

  • Faculty, Staff and Substitutes all wear name tags while in the building.
  • Visitors check in and are escorted to their destination.
  • Closing Track during school hours
  • Increased practice and focus on perfection of drills

 

Woodland Middle School

  • Faculty, Staff and Substitutes all wear name tags while in the building.
  • Updated Safety plan
  • Closing Track during school hours
  • Increased practice and focus on perfection of drills

 

Woodland Primary School

  • Doors and locking mechanisms replaced or upgraded to insure secure locking
  • Exterior doors all locked by custodians (8:35 each day), and checked and lunch time
  • Student movement patterns adjust to reflect more movement via inside routes from one part of the building to another
  • Increased exterior lighting around facility
  • School personnel only on playground during recess times
  • Increased staff supervision at before/after school times
  • Increased visitor expectations:  ALL via main office, no one without approved background checks in classrooms, wear id. Tags, pre-approved list of classroom Volunteers
  • Staff practice /debriefing of increased safety protocols
  • Primary and Football Field areas are closed and locked to public during school hours
  • Signs posted communicating closed campus during school hours
  • Kindergarten pick-up procedures modified (Last year for ½ day K)

 

Woodland Intermediate School

  • All parents/visitors must have completed the background check process to participate in field trips or other school sponsored activities.
  • All parents/visitors are required to check in through the office and obtain a visitor badge.
  • All exterior doors are marked as exit only and posted with visitor check in expectations.
  • All areas on campus occupied by students are supervised by staff before school, throughout the school day, and during dismissal.
  • Staff supervising students before school, on the playground, and after school wear brightly colored safety vests for immediate identification by students.
  • Emergency drills (earthquake, fire/emergency evacuation, and lock down) are routinely practiced.
  • Staff has communication available by telephone and/or handheld radio throughout the building and playground at all times.
  • Security cameras monitor the front and back of the school as well as the undercover play area.
  • Emergency plans are posted in every classroom.
  • Emergency preparedness kits are available in every classroom. 
  • School wide emergency drills are practiced monthly.

 

Yale School

  • All parents/visitors must have completed the background check process to participate in field trips or other school sponsored activities.
  • All entrances to the school are locked during the school day (with the exception of outdoor recess times when an adult supervisor is present)   Parents/visitors must ring a door bell during school ours to gain admission to the school.
