Dear Woodland Parents, Guardians, and Community Members:

What an epic winter season we are having!

We are glad our children enjoyed the snow, but also recognize the weather’s impact on students, parents, and staff. We certainly share your frustration with the snow and ice events Woodland has seen over the past weeks - leading to a record nine snow make-up days. While the district plans the school calendars with snow make-up days reserved in advance, we did not anticipate quite as many snow days as we have experienced so far this year. Currently, the additional snow make-up days have been added to the end of the school year. The good news is that despite the large collection of snow make-up days needed this year, we will only be ending two days later than the 2015-16 school year.

We would like to assure you that instructional time with students is our utmost priority. Our staff members dedicate themselves to ensuring our students learn everything necessary for each grade level, so maintaining instructional time will continue to be the primary goal when looking for solutions for making up days missed. We do understand that families may have already scheduled vacations that are now impacted by our extended school year. If you have a scheduling conflict, please contact your school and we will work with you to accommodate absences.

The district looked strongly at Monday, January 23 (a non-student day) to make up one of these snow days. However, Woodland High School is hosting the annual FBLA State Conference (where teams of students from schools throughout Washington compete) on that date. Also, building principals have heard from families who have already made arrangements for that date. After much consideration we concluded it is not feasible to use this day as a make-up day.

The district is actively researching ways for our seniors, in particular, to make up the snow days to prevent delays to their graduation date. While we can’t accommodate the entire student population, we have found the beginning of a workable solution by offering school for our seniors this upcoming Monday from 8:30-11:30 am. By attending on Monday, our seniors will reduce the number of days they need to make up prior to graduation. At this time, our goal is to keep graduation on the date it is currently scheduled (June 9, 2017).

As always, we will continue to keep you informed with any changes to our schedule for the year. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this unique situation and would like to express our gratitude as we continue to navigate through this chillier-than-normal winter season.
