Mathematics with Mrs O'Flynn

WELCOME!

These pages contain course information, our assignment calendar, our classroom blogs/forum, and a variety of resources. Enjoy!

We're a high tech classroom!

To view our projects, just click Mathcasts on the menu at the left side of this page.

Several articles have been published about the use of interactive technology in our classroom:

Other highlights:

  • I presented Starboard Whiteboard Movies: An Innovative Use of Education Technology at EduComm 2007 in Anaheim, CA on June 21st with Michele Conway from Cambridge University Press. In the presentation, I shared some of my students' mathcast projects from the 2006-2007 school year. I'd like to give special thanks to Algebra 2 students Bobby and Brittany and Pre Calculus students Shannon and Nathan for the use of their wonderful projects!
  • Mr. VanCleef and I presented at the ESD 112 Sustainable Classroom Project Celebraton at the Oak Tree on June 28th. We shared how we have integrated technology in our classrooms and our plans for our mathcast project. Follow this link to learn more about our sustainable classroom.
  • Thanks to Hitachi and Troxell Communications, we have received some new technology for our classroom including a Hitachi BT-2G Bluetooth tablet and a site license Mult-e-Maths software for the Hitachi Starboard. I was also able to preview Hitachi's new Starboard FX-2 Interactive Whiteboard should be available this October.
  • Ms. Conditt and I presented Practical Applications and the Role of Technology in Assessment FOR Learning at the 14th Annual ATI/ETS Summer Conference In Portland, OR on July 24th. We shared the ways in which we organize our classrooms and utilize technology for formative assessment.
  • I attended a week-long AP Calculus workshop at the Vancouver AP Summer Institute. What could be better than a week of calculus to get you in the "school" mood? :) During the conference, TI conducted a 3-hour session using the new TI-Nspire which is a graphing calculator/handheld computer device. You can see my comments on the TI-Nspire here.
  • Somewhere in there I managed to fit in some camping, boating, river rafting, and four-wheeling in the Oregon dunes. :)

2007 QWEST FOUNDATION LEARNING TECHNOLOGY GRANT

On March 8, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction announced that Patty O'Flynn and Kash VanCleef of Woodland High School have been chosen to receive a $10,000 Qwest Foundation Learning Technology Grant! Our mathcast project is one of ten projects across Washington state chosen for funding by the Qwest Foundation. The Qwest Foundation grants spotlight and recognize K-12 public school teachers who have found innovative ways to engage students with learning technologies and improve their academic performance within a standards-based curriculum. As grant recipients, we will share our experience and expertise with educators statewide over the next two years.

Please follow the links below to learn more about the 2007 Qwest Foundation Grant and about our mathcast project:

2007 BEST BUY TE@CH AWARD

The BestBuy TE@CH Program rewards schools that use interactive technology to make learning fun for students. Best Buy recognizes programs that have been in schools for at least one full school year and that use interactive technology to genuinely engage students in the learning process. We were chosen this year to receive a $2500 Best Buy TE@CH award to purchase equipment for our student whiteboard movies. We have used these funds to equip our student computer stations with 7 Wacom 6x8 Graphire4 graphics tablets, 7 Logitech USB headsets with microphones, a USB-powered 120 GB hard drive, a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 webcam, and a video iPod for podcasting. Thank you, Best Buy, for supporting our mathcast project!

We purchased our new equipment on Saturday, February 24th, and have creating mathcasts this week in our Algebra 2 and Pre Calculus classes. If you'd like to view our movies, links will be posted soon at the bottom of each course page (see menu on left side of this page).

Applications for the BestBuy TE@CH Program are due each September. If you'd like to learn more about the Best Buy TE@CH program, please read the FAQ.

WE'RE A SUSTAINABLE CLASSROOM!

During the 2005-2006 school year, our classroom participated in the Sustainable Classroom Grant. Through this grant, we received a Hitachi StarBoard Interactive Display Panel and Hitachi StarBoard Bluetooth Freedom Tablet, AverVision 300i document camera, Hitachi projector, a Califone sound system, eInstruction wireless response system and a subscription to eBoard.com. How did all of this technology change our classroom? Students use technology on a daily basis to make learning a more interactive experience. We use "clickers" to get immediate feedback on assignments and quizzes, use our digital whiteboard and document camera to make lessons more interactive and to have students share their work, and use graphics tablets and screen recording software to create whiteboard movies (Mathcasts) of student work. Last year was very exciting, and I am looking forward to another rewarding year! To find out more about our Sustainable Classroom, click HERE.

AND A TLP CLASSROOM!

In 2002-2003, our classroom participated in the Teacher Leadership Project (also known as the Gates Grant). The TLP grant enabled us to purchase eight student computers, software, projector and other equipment for our classroom. We use this technology to explore mathematics and solve problems in a variety of ways.
